Fedora 9: Sun Java on Fedora 9 Install HowTo

Fedora keeps on getting better and better. Redhat hell-dummy package management is forever gone together with conflicting library modules and inconsistent library usage. This has been possible and now more effective handled by yum rpm package installer.

For you to be able to browse java-enabled websites on Fedora 9, here's a quick howto on Sun Java installation on Fedora 9. Read on.

Fedora 9: Sun Java Installation on Fedora 9

1. Download Sun Java.

Sun Java executable binary package can be downloaded here. Download the Linux RPM version (self-extracting file) with current version of jre-6u6-linux-i586.rpm.bin.

2. Extract and execute rpm package.

After successful download, as root simply follow as shown

# chmod 700 jre-6u6-linux-i586.rpm.bin
# ./jre-6u6-linux-i586.rpm.bin

Answer and agree with Java's terms and agreement before you can proceed with full installation.

3. By default installation, there's a some kind of browser glitch with the installation resulting to Firefox misbehaviour loading java-enabled sites. To globally fix this, simply

# cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
# ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

4. Restart Mozilla Firefox 3.0 browser (default) and you're good to go.

Success. Enjoy.
