How to Install and Setup Networking Profile Manager

For portable linux laptop users, one could imagine the difficulty and hazzle of doing network IP setup changes when moving from one location to another. If a user uses his laptop from his wifi-enabled office and later on moved to a different wifi location outside his office, a new wifi profile setup needs to be done and this repeats itself.

Networking Profile Manager in Fedora exists.

NetGo is a distribution-independent networking tool for changing network settings quickly and easily. NetGo is intended for laptop owners and most users with changing internet connectivity location, who often need to change network settings when relocating. NetGo allows you to create network profiles.

NetGo network profile contains the network settings such as IP, netmask, gateway, name servers and wireless options ready available under a profile selection. Profile creations are as easy as wizard type dialog boxes, which brings you to answer several setup boxes. After the profile setup, networking profile are available from profile selection and can be selected with just a single click. NetGo is also dockable applcation that gives you an opportunity to change profile by simply undocking NetGo and choosing the profile. NetGo, written in QT and available under GPL2 license.

NetGo is just 125K of rpm package and can easily be downloaded and installed using Fedora yum.

# yum -y install netgo

NetGo Configuration Setup

Launch NetGo

# netgo

On first NetGo execution, an initial setup is needed. NetGo confirms and verify a few binary locations as shown below. Simply Enter for defaults.

Now, here's a dialog box for creating a network profile. Simply click Add Profile to proceed


Simply fill up the necessary fields to complete your current profile setup to suit your profile need on a particular setup and location. If the setup is implementing static IP addresses, you can ask internet administrator for IP address, gateway and netmask. A similar fields would be like so


Make sure you choose the correct interface device for your setup. Optionally, for wifi setup requirements, simply click More Options from the above dialog box to come up with the below dialog box for more wifi settings.


Save and close. You now have your profile created. You can go select the newly created network profile and go ahead for a test.


This process can be repeated over and over again for more roaming network profiles.

NetGo can be useful to everybody who usually connects to internet and relocates from one place to another at the same time. NetGo highly suits frequent travellers having their own laptop with them on connecting to WiFi-enabled area location inside the airport.
